After many days of moving sand and water. Apparently there hasn't been so much coming and going down to the glastraeth between Talsarnau and Ynys Gifftan since that time when a whale was found that failed to return to the sea with the tide some time ago. Over this Sunday, October 24th 1986, like that time, a number of Talsarnau residents and others were seen walking down towards Ynys Gifftan and you could feel the intrigue and curiosity in the air - everyone asking and discussing what had appeared from the sand.

  • Recollections of Nel Llenyrch

Living and Working on a Remote Farm in Llandecwyn   I went to Llenyrch at 15 years old, having served before that for four years, after my mother's death when I was eleven years old. Llenyrch was a wonderful home. The salary - ten shillings a week for twenty years - 50p a week in today’s money,. Went from there for a while after getting married to live in Manod, but back again, both of us this time, to finish the twenty years. Healthy food, produced on the farm, which is Siot, finely ground Oatmeal bread, with buttermilk on it, Brwas, Two milk posset - boiled milk and pour it on a little buttermilk, Llymru, Porridge, Oats or Rice, White Sican, Cosyn Caws Cartref, Home-made honey. • Recollections of the Blind Harpist

I was very young, and two men, if I remember correctly - Wmffra Williams and my father, going to meet him and carrying his harp up to Talsarnau and there was a concert at the school. I remember the concert and there was great fun there, with all kinds of singing, which pleased everyone. Questioner - Were you raising funds at the time? DGW - Yes, towards Soar Chapel. Questioner - You don't remember which year? DGW - It was somewhere around I would say 1910, maybe earlier. 1910 is quite close I'd say....I went to serve then....I served in Barmouth in 1916 and 1917 and I came into very close contact with him - I would get a parcel of clean clothes from Talsarnau from my mother and there was a girl coming to Barmouth…

  • SOAR DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR

SOAR DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR   Soar was a small Welsh village, sheltered under Allt Cefntrefor and Clogwyn Gwyn. During the war, and for many years afterwards, with the Chapel (Wesleyan) as a central point, there were fourteen houses and ten belonging to the Chapel, one car, a few motorbikes and many small bikes. Most of the people would be walking everywhere, everyone being neighbourly and looking out for each other. There was disagreement a few times, but I only remember the good times. I lived there until I was about 11 years old and when I moved to Pengelli, a quarter of a mile away, after the war, I missed Soar immensely, and often  walked to the top of Rhiw Garth to see if everything was alright there, and went to the Chapel on Sundays. Three 'bakers' would come from around the area, Dic from Trawsfynydd, Alun and…
