Ardudwy Evangelical Church
The Ardudwy Evangelical Church is an association of people who count it a privilege to witness to the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We meet at The New Chapel, on the street in Talsarnau. ( LL47 6TY).
Background, History and Information about Capel Newydd
Ardudwy Evangelical Church was established in 1980. The Reverend Gwilym Humphreys, Llanfair, was the advocate and original members included Gwilym and Beth Humphreys, Llanfair, Lisbeth Richards, Llanbedr, Meirion and Margaret Williams, Hendre Eirian, Talybont, Brian and Gwenda Paul, Penrhyndeudraeth and Peter Llwyd, Penrhyndeudraeth. John Glyn was called and inducted to be their minister in the same year.
In 1982, Dewi Tudur, who had been a Baptist minister in Rhosllannerugog, came to serve as an Assistant. The church met at different homes in the area and on Sunday evenings at Capel y Graig, Talsarnau. In 1986, the old co-op building in the village, which had been secluded for some time, was purchased and modified Bryn Cader Faneryn le for worship. It was an ideal building as the different rooms were eligible for different types of meetings. Sunday School is held, there is a meeting for young people, Bible studies and a meeting midweek but the main room of the shop is used for Sunday services.
The church has no formal affiliation with any denomination, movement or organization and has maintained a minister from the outset. John Glyn's tenure ended in 2009 and Dewi Tudur took over, full time, in 2010. The usual Sunday routine is a Prayer Service and Sunday School at 10:30 and a Sermon at 6:00. A Bible study and Fellowship meeting on Wednesday evenings (apart from the summer months). This is an opportunity to discuss the Christian faith and its relevance to us today. The church takes pride in the fact that there is an invitation for everyone, from whatever background or tradition, to come to the meetings
.
The church holds many different types of meetings in order to spread the word in Ardudwy. Breakfasts for men are held on Saturday mornings regularly at the Ship Aground, Talsarnau. This is a golden opportunity for men to share experiences. We recently invited Aled Jones, President of N.F.U. Wales to talk about his faith, and Dr Owain Edwards to talk about the challenges which face us. The girls also meet for supper and Dr Sara Webster has given a talk about the trials before us and Lisbeth James on another occasion spoke of the main message of the Bible.
Also, of course, there are more traditional meetings. We will hold a Thanksgiving Service in the Autumn, a New Year Service, (which according to old tradition is a Prayer Meeting) and at Christmas, a Carol Service will be held for the community. The church distributes over 200 invitations in the area to motivate people to attend. We have a Christmas party for the children annually, and Father Christmas will come by. At the beginning of March, a St David's Day talk will be given where a recognised historian is invited to lecture on a popular historical subject but which is relevant to Christiaans today.
The great challenge for this church, in the face of religious upheaval, is to testify to the Lord Jesus Christ and remind each other, and the community, that the Gospel Message is as fitting as ever.

Llanfihangel y Traethau Church
There are two churches still open at Talsarnau – Llandecwyn church which is not far from LlynTecwyn Uchaf, and Llanfihangel church which is called Llanfihangel y Traethau (St Michael's by the Beaches) as it is by the sea.
There is an ancient grave stone near the porch that dates back to the twelfth century which proves that this church pre-dates the castle in Harlech.
Few services are held at Llandecwyn as the road is steep and narrow. The occasional funeral, an annual thanksgiving service and a few services are held during August.
The two churches are open every day as places to meditate or pray for anyone needing peace and quiet and both churches belong to small pilgrim places – where people have used these sites for eight centuries or more.
A bilingual service is held at Llanfihangel each Sunday at 11.30 a.m. - with morning prayers or holy communion on alternate Sundays. There is no service on the fifth Sunday each month, which happens about three times a year when another church in Bro Ardudwy can be attended.
This church was built as a chapel for the parish of Llandecwyn at the end of the eleventh century and was used as an every day school, but the school was closed when they built Tyddyn Eglwys - the rectory in 1832 and Llanfihangel then became the parish church.
The church is consecrated to Saint Mihangel (like many others in Wales) It got its name because the two rivers, the Glaslyn and the Dwyryd enter the sea nearby - hence it was called Llanfihangel y Traethau (St Michaels by the Beaches). There are many graves of seamen and sea captains here, and well known people like Mari'r Fantell Wen and authors like Gwyneth Vaughan and Richard Hughes have been buried in the church yard.
Capel y Graig (by the Rev Dewi Tudur Lewis)
In his book on Baptist history in the area, the Reverend Samuel Pierce refers to a cause by the Baptists at Bryn y Bwa Bach in 1763 and that services were held there at 2.00 pm on Sundays. This was probably the start of the cause in Talsarnau. The chapel was called Ebenezer but I do not know when it was built or established as a place of worship.
Here are some personal memories. Ceridwn Jones, or Dodo Bwthyn, as she was popularly known, was responsible for maintaining the cause when I came to the area in 1982. She was the secretary and organist. She was a very witty and original character.
Reverend Tecwyn Ifan came to preach on Sundays in October, before Thanksgiving Monday. (Usually on the 3rd Monday in October) Tecwyn stayed with Ceridwen Jones on the Sunday evening to save having to travel before holding the Thanksgiving Service on the following day. When publicly thanking the welcome on Monday afternoon, Tecwyn Ifan said he enjoyed the welcome and had a "few smokes with Dodo!!" That was the last time Tecwyn was invited to preach there!!
I preached frequently at Capel y Graig. Here are the names of some of the people who attended the services there. Mrs Kate Williams, Ty'n y Fron, Mrs Agnes Evans, Cefn Trefor Isaf, Mrs Nelta Roberts, Bronwylfa, Mrs Iona Aubrey, Garth Byr. The cause came to an end and the building was sold sometime in the 1990s.
